iPhone 15 Announcement
Published: 18th September 2023

In September 2023, Apple introduced us to the latest iPhones in the franchise and we were lucky enough to see four new models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max – all of which will be released later in the month. As we all know, Apple seem to have a habit for always bringing out something newer and better the second after you’ve upgraded your handsets to the latest model, but rest assured, the iPhone 15 collection will remain part of Apple’s leading lineup for the next year.
So, what’s new?
USB-C Charging
One of the biggest new features of the new models is the introduction of a USB-C charging port, rather than the traditional Lightning port. This was to be expected, however, following the EU declaring that all portable devices need to be compatible with a universal charger by December 2024, so Apple were undoubtably under pressure to make a change with their new releases.
After using Lightning cables for iPhones for over 10 years, Apple’s switch to USB-C may come with an initial annoyance. However, unlike their last charging cable switch (30-pin to Lightning), this transition should be much smoother as USB-C is becoming one of the more universal cable types across multiple devices. This means you may even have a load of these cables sitting around the office already!
Size & Dimensions
Beginning with screen sizes – the iPhone 15 and the 15 Pro have a 6.1-inch screen, with the iPhone 15 Plus and the 15 Pro Max featuring a larger 6.7-inch. Does size matter? Depending on your individual use cases, it definitely can. We’ll look at from a work and productivity perspective: for creative professionals the larger screen of the 15 Plus and 15 Pro Max will be more beneficial, whereas for workers constantly on the move, focusing more on communication, the slightly smaller and lighter 15 and 15 Pro may have better functionality. We’ll also take a look at some more features which could impact the suitability of the different models depending on industry use cases, further on.
The screen sizes of the new models are the same as their alternatives from the iPhone 14 series, so if you’re looking to upgrade straight from one of those, screen size and dimensions won’t be too different.
Dynamic Island
Making its first appearance on the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island replaces the old notch at the top of the handset screen with a shape shifting, pill-shaped panel, which as the name suggests, dynamically houses notifications in a way which better suits the app that a user is in. It also acts as a control panel for music and phone calls.
Other Updates
There are improvements made to the camera of the new iPhones, with a new 48-megapixel main camera. This features a quad-pixel sensor which defaults to 24-megapixel photos, as well as a 2x Telephoto option.
The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus use the A16 Bionic Chip which uses around 20% less power, delivers improved performance, and 50% better memory bandwidth, in comparison to the previous A15 Bionic Chip. Or if you wanted to better this, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max feature a A17 Pro Chip. This is 3-nanometer chip which boasts up to 20% faster GPU performance than the A16, along with 10% faster CPU performance. The models with the A17 Pro also include an AV1 decoder which facilitates more high-quality videos for streaming services, as well as video output capabilities up to 4K 60 fps HDR.
A few additional unique features to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are the aerospace-grade titanium frame and the all-new customizable action button. The latter replaces the side switch for silent mode and is instead a button which can be used for actions such as starting voice memos, opening the camera, and many other shortcuts.
Which Option Is Best, If Any?
There’s a belief that it isn’t always necessary to immediately go out and buy the latest iPhone, and that’s sometimes true. While there are no groundbreaking features which are guaranteed to transform business productivity that don’t feature already on a previous iPhone model, there are some handy new features which would well suit professionals in creative industries, more so with the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Top-end visual displays and graphic capabilities, as well as an improved camera and larger screen size for the 15 Pro Max, will certainly benefit those who are needing to get their creative juices flowing outside the office. The slightly smaller size and lower specifications of the iPhone 15 would be a very suitable solution for employees who need to keep communication strong from any location and are looking for a slightly more ergonomic and portable handset.
